Bruce Vilanch is a six-time Emmy Award-winning comedian. Best known to the public for his four-year stint on Hollywood Squares, as a celebrity participant; behind the scenes he was head writer for the show.

In 2000, he performed off-Broadway in his self-penned one-man show, Bruce Vilanch: Almost Famous. Since 2000, Vilanch has been the head writer for the Oscars, after being an Oscar program co-writer for the previous ten years. He is a featured writer for the Tonys, Grammys and Emmys.

Improv Nerd Live Podcast Interview and Show

Improv Nerd with Jimmy Carrane, is a live interview and improv show hosted by Jimmy Carrane, a comedian, well-known improv teacher and former host of Studio 312 on Chicago Public Radio. In this show, Jimmy interviews icons in the world of improv and comedy, giving audiences a behind-the-scenes look at their creative process, followed by a totally unscripted comedy show.


Master Classes & Workshops with Top Instructors

NCCAF offers master classes that focus on advanced improv technique and diagnostics, comedy writing and acting skills. Saturday workshop classes run on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Saturday Feb. 15. Faculty include: Rick Andrews (Magnet TourCo), Chet Siegel (Magnet TourCo), Alan Fessenden (Magnet TourCo), Peter McNerney (Magnet TourCo), Corey Brown (UCBT NY), Eric Hunicutt (iO West, Steppenwolf), Zach Ward (DSI Comedy), and many other incredible coaches and teachers.


North Carolina Laughter Championship

DSI Comedy Theater and the NC Comedy Arts Festival proudly partners with Albert Nerenberg, director of Laughology, to hold the third Annual North Carolina Laughter Championship. Competing in a series of Laugh-offs contestants will be awarded the title 2014 NC Laughter Champion by the crowd and our winner will be entered into the South East regional contest held in Atlanta.


Special Screening of Documentary The Muslims Are Coming!

This comedy documentary follows a band of Muslim-American comedians as they visit big cities, small towns, rural villages, and everything in between to combat Islamophobia! Throughout the film, comedy icons like The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Aasif Mandvi and media heavy weights like Rachel Maddow, Soledad O’Brien and Ali Velshi comment on the power of comedy and the political scope of bigotry.


Return of The Rap Battle

This classic show is a real crowd pleaser. An NCCAF staple of years gone by, 16 emcees will take the stage in an all-out improvised battle of wits, rhymes, and tenacity. The show is a single-bracket elimination-style tournament of the best improvising emcees in North America. At the end of the night, only one emcee will remain standing and be declared the 2014 NCCAF Rap Battle Champion.


Awesome Special Events Throughout the Entire Festival

Every year the festival hosts a number of special events and parties. This year, we're hosting even more events, after parties, and comedy showcases including a Comedy-Inspired Art Show, an Adult Spelling Bee, the Third Annual Great Durham Pun Championship, A Night of Comedic Stories hosted by NCCAF and The Monti, educational panel discussions, and so much more.
