What You Need, Diagnostic with Armando Diaz

In this workshop we will work on what YOU need to work on. Armando will assess your skills and give you instruction on what to do to improve your improv.

Armando is widely regarded as one of the best improv teachers in New York City and beyond. Trained by Del Close and Mick Napier in Chicago, his list of teaching credits include the ImprovOlympic, The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, The Peoples Improv Theater, and Michael Howard Studios. He has trained dozens of actors who have performed or written for Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Mad TV, and The Daily Show.

Limited to 12 students per workshop.

No Idea with Armando Diaz

Sometimes you just have to edit and start a new scene. And sometimes you just don't have any ideas. What do you do? In this workshop Armando Diaz helps you work on how initiate and improvise scenes with little or nothing and still make great scenes.

Limited to 16 students per workshop.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WORKSHOP AVAILABLE TO ALL WRITERS AND PERFORMERS, "STUDENT FEE" ONLY AVAILABLE FOR REGISTERED NC COMEDY ARTS FESTIVAL PERFORMERS (WHO HAVE ELECTED TO REGISTER FOR THE WORKSHOP PACKAGE).

Storytelling & Personal Essays with Jane Borden

Everyone has a funny or crazy true story, and anyone can be a storyteller: It's all in the way you frame it. This workshop will give you the tools necessary to craft stories as entertainment for larger audiences. Those already writing or performing will gain a fresh perspective.

Jane's first book, a memoir in essays, titled "I Totally Meant to Do That", was published this year. Vanity Fair called it “affectionate” and New York Magazine deemed it “lowbrow-brilliant.” The Brooklyn Paper announced Borden as “the new ‘It’ girl.” As a comedian, Jane has appeared on Comedy Central and VH1; her humorous writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Modern Bride, in two anthologies, and on Saturday Night Live.

Jump-start Your Scene with Kevin Patrick Robbins

The first five to 10 seconds of a scene are the most important. Learn to jump-start your scenes with lightning fast speed and a deep understanding of the initiation and what it means.

The three stages of the improv scene are: the antecedent stage, what was happening right before the scene started that defines the primary context of the scene; the organic stage, the "yes and..." portion of the scene; and the game stage, wherein lies the comedy of the scene.

Improv Practice with DSI Comedy School

By reinforcing the fundamental skills of improv comedy, DSI makes it easier for students to engage in the scene and relationships on stage. DSI does not encourage you to be a "funny" person. As the art of improvisation becomes easier, and your own sense of humor becomes more developed and we achieve comedy. In these workshops new and old students can get improv practice and a taste of our philosophy by working with veteran DSI intsructors.

Limited to 16 students per workshop.
